Food Budget Challenge: The Frugal Foodie

Our annual food budget (for 2) is coming out to about $24,000 — which is way too much! I’m focusing on reducing our food spend by meticulously tracking costs for at least one month to see where to cut and to make sure we don’t splurge too much. I’m focusing on my own food spending, which I’m trying to get to under $500 for the month. I started this initiative on the 3rd of the month, after blowing almost 1/5 of my budget on the first two days. This madness has got to stop.

September

1 – Thursday ($27.90)

$7.90 – breakfast (starbucks)
$20.00 – lunch (ate at restaurant)

2 – Friday ($62.50)

$8.00 – pizza breakfast/lunch
$32.70 – dinner with friend (salad + wine flight)
$21.80 – dessert with friend (wine + cheese plate split)

3 – Saturday ($23.13)
$18.63 – lunch / dining out with Mr. HECC
$4.50 – dinner pasta with chicken (official start of frugal foodie month)

So far this month I’m averaging $12.60 a meal, which is way too high. Time to get serious.

4 – Sunday ($9.39)

$0.78 – breakfast, two eggs over easy + parmesan cheese
$2.30 – lunch – parmesan cheese (ok, I ate almost the entire container)
$4.70 – dinner – pasta with chicken
$1.61 – apple

5. – Monday ()

$2.99 – breakfast – pint of strawberries
$2.55 – lunch – pho noodles that I found in kitchen closet that wasn’t expired (score!) (*price estimate)
